Being Thankful in the Hard Times

Sometimes it can seem hard to give thanks when we’re in the midst of a difficult, trying situation. Yet God’s Word tells us: “In everything give thanks; for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus for you” (1 Thessalonians 5:18). Why would God expect us to offer thanks when things are tough? I think I know one reason why this is so.

It’s kind of like when my kids were small. They could be crying one minute over some unfortunate occurrence, only to erupt in smiles and laughter the next minute at the suggestion of going to get an ice cream cone. The ice cream didn’t change what had happened, but it changed their perspective. In like fashion, when we turn our focus from our problems to God, we change our perspective. We yield to God’s sovereignty over every situation and issue in our lives. As we hand our concerns over to God, He meets us where we are. His Spirit communicates His love and care. The more we focus on Him, the more we are moved to thanksgiving as He reveals His love, reminds us of His promises, and wraps us in the assurance of His presence.

This past week has been a rough week as we have dealt with the loss of our grandson. Yet God has been in our loss. He has been right there with us, sometimes in ways that we could see, and perhaps at other times in ways that we were not even aware. But with every tear and deep feeling of loss, I’ve been fully aware of God’s love and presence with me. While I may not understand why, I know that I can trust it to Him, and I am so thankful that in this terrible loss, I have a God who knows, understands, and who walks with me through it.

Sometimes our path’s not easy,

The sky’s not always blue,

Sometimes our way seems all uphill

And clouds obscure our view.

Yet in our worries and struggles

Or in our sorrow and pain,

When our night is the darkest,

There is hope in Jesus’ name!

He may not cure the cancer

He may give us food, not a feast,

He may not change the circumstance,

But through it, grant us peace.

He will shine through the darkness,

Illuminate our way,

He will give us strength and courage

And intercede when we can’t pray.

He will surround us with His presence

Bring comfort through the night

And will raise us up like eagles

When we’re weary from the fight.

So when the storms of life assail,

When I’m weary, worn, and sore,

I’ll find refuge in my Savior,

No one else could love me more!

“Make a joyful shout to the Lord, all you lands!

Serve the Lord with gladness; come before His presence with singing.

Know that the Lord, He is God; It is He who has made us, and not we ourselves;

We are His people and the sheep of His pasture.

Enter into His gates with thanksgiving, and into His courts with praise.

Be thankful to Him, and bless His name.

For the Lord is good; His mercy is everlasting,

And His truth endures to all generations.”

(Psalm 100)
